Polls show President Trump’s political fortunes tanking, but New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu still says the incumbent president is likely to win the Granite State.
During an appearance Tuesday on Fox News Radio, Sununu told host Guy Benson, “I think the president’s going to win New Hampshire. I really do.”
“We’re very libertarian here. Right? We have a lot of folks that don’t answer polls. They come out and vote,” Sununu said. “And you saw that very strong turnout out of nowhere, frankly, in 2016. Those voters are still there. They’re going to turn out, and I think the vast majority are still going to be with President Trump.”
“I think Trump will likely win New Hampshire. It’ll be close, though,” Sununu concluded.
The Real Clear Politics polling average gives former Vice President Joe Biden a lead of more than eight points in the Granite State, and a recent Rasmussen Research poll put Biden’s margin at +14. Sununu, on the other hand, continues to hold a double-digit lead over Democratic state Sen. Dan Feltes in the race for governor.
Feltes and the Democrats have largely based the campaign on the message that Sununu is “a Trump guy.” They’re spending around $1 million attempting to link Trump and Sununu. Thus far, to little effect.
President Trump’s taken a political pounding over how he’s handled his own case of COVID-19 and his message to Americans not to let the virus “dominate your life.” But Sununu said he’s sticking with the POTUS.
“I’m a Republican. I support the president. But I call the balls and strikes like I see them. When Congress stood around and did nothing – as they’ve continued to do for the past few months – I’m very critical of Congress, Republicans and Democrats.”
“When the President came out and took his mask off, I don’t think that was the right look, to be honest,” Sununu added. “I don’t know if that was the smartest thing to do.”
Sununu was on the air around the same time Trump was announcing he’d called off all negotiations with congressional Democrats over a COVID-19 relief deal.
“Nancy Pelosi is asking for $2.4 Trillion Dollars to bailout poorly run, high crime, Democrat States, money that is in no way related to COVID-19. We made a very generous offer of $1.6 Trillion Dollars and, as usual, she is not negotiating in good faith,” Trump said via Twitter. “I am rejecting their request, and looking to the future of our Country. I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election when, immediately after I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill that focuses on hardworking Americans and Small Business.”
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped nearly 400 points on the news.
After the news broke, Sununu sent out a tweet of his own:
“Washington continues to drop the ball, unwilling to work together to fulfill the promises they made to the states. In spite of their inaction, New Hampshire will continue to thrive, respond to this pandemic in a scientific, data-driven way, and get the job done for our citizens.”
