Lately, I have been asked what a Trump re-election would mean. Truly I had not been considering that possibility.
I have been working very hard to make sure he doesn’t get re-elected. I am part of the Lincoln Project and 43 Alumni for Biden. Two groups that target Republican voters to vote for Vice President Joe Biden.
Four years ago, I was one of those Republicans who could not see Trump being elected; so I was shocked when he did. Was it a fluke, an abomination? To be sure most Americans rejected him; more than 3 million Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than for him. Our electoral college is quite different from any other democracy.
So we ended up with an amoral, soulless individual who would share with the world the emptiness of his heart, devoid of any empathy for anyone but himself.
Trump’s greed and ambition are limitless. His entire family has openly and without remorse participated in the seizing of government resources that would make any other politician not even seek reelection.
So, what would it mean if he gets reelected? It is my opinion that America’s generous soul, once the envy of the world, would no longer be considered so. We would have become what Trump is: completely and utterly lacking in any empathy for those who suffer the most.
We would be putting Wall Street ahead of Main Street. We would be putting yes America first, but also America alone. We would be putting our own greed ahead of those who need a helping hand.
I have wondered out loud whether, in fact, that is who we have become. I hear some of my Republican friends: “well, I don’t like what he says, but my 401K is doing very well,” and I just shudder.
I have made my case not just against Trump but for Biden. Clearly, I do not believe I will agree with every policy a Biden presidency would advance. I am certain when that is the case, I will voice my concerns. But I can not imagine a Biden presidency or, for that matter, anyone else’s to be so self-serving, so cruel and inhumane and so brazen in its hypocrisy.
It is indeed my heartfelt desire to ensure that Trump is sent packing this coming Tuesday. Otherwise, it would be the continuation of the chiseling of our great country’s fundamental values of honor, sacrifice, and leadership, and with that, the great American story would be coming to an end.
